Whether you agree or not, the Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and President Obama have signed legislation extending the Bush tax cuts for another two years. Unfortunately, the final bill features a tax credit of up to $200 for Energy Star-qualified windows and skylights and up to $500 for Energy Star-qualified doors for 2011. This was a dramatic reduction in the original tax credit program of $1,500.00.
Unfortunately, the credit was a victim of the relentless pursuit of budget cuts. It may be taken up again in the future, but for now those who decide to replace their windows and doors with energy efficient products will still receive significant improvement in energy efficiency but, unfortunately, minimal tax benefit going forward. We are hopeful that this program will be revisited by the incoming congress as it encourages consumers to maximize energy efficiency in their homes, at the same time providing further protection of the environment and natural resources.
